Abstract:
The main project objective is to facilitate simple but dynamic reconfiguration of complex production processes, as needed for cost-efficient and flexible production of products that meet swiftly changing consumer requirements. The key idea consists in the novel concept of skill-based manufacturing, i.e., production units with embedded knowledge about their skills being able to interact in order to solve a given manufacturing task. Being particularly suitable for a European level of work-force competence, but avoiding the need for experts for the local configuration of advanced equipment, the proposed skill-based approach should enhance the competitive edge of the European industry.
